My HP Photosmart printer C4180 is showing lines across printed items?

My previously reliable printer is now printing photos with faint parallel lines across each one. The same effect is showing on copies printed from my laptop on good quality paper. Is this something that can be rectified before I waste either more photographic paper or copy paper? Advice please.
